There’s plenty to love about exposing kids to yoga, from how it helps them build strength and flexibility to how it teaches them about the balance of body, mind and spirit. We’ve discovered 6 local spots where little ones can channel their inner yogi in super-fun, age-appropriate classes. (Before you know it, their downward dog will be better than yours.)
Kids Yoga at 5Focus
This weekly morning class blends games, storytelling and yoga poses to help kids build body awareness, strength and coordination, while also inspiring them to exercise and breathe. Saturdays, 10 am, South Lake Union, $10 per child, ages 3 to 10. Read more.
Kids Yoga Class at Bikram Yoga at the SweatBox
An hour long intro-to-yoga class teaches kids the general yoga philosophy, lets them practice yoga postures and play yoga-inspired games. Sat., May 8, 1 to 2 pm, Capitol Hill; Sun., May 9, 1 to 2 pm, Shoreline. $10 per child, ages 5 to 8. Read more.
Kids Yoga at The Ashram
This Kirkland-based studio offers hot vinyasa yoga for adults, but on several days a week, kids can take a simultaneous yoga class that includes games, animal postures, stores and snacks. (And no worries, the room’s temperature is kept cooler than traditional Bikram class!) Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 1 pm; Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:45; Kirkland, prices vary. Kids Yoga at Orange Blossom Society
The folks at OBS offer several types of yoga classes. Kid Yoga is for ages 3 and up and includes stretching and strengthening exercises, plus imaginative thinking. Kids Yoga + Art is for ages 3 to 10 and is a yoga class, followed by art class where students draw pics inspired by their yoga experience. Kid Yoga + Movement is for ages 8 to 12 and combines yoga postures with other forms of movement such as modern dance, ballet and improvisation. Blossoming Yogis
Certified instructor Anna Starikov offers Baby, Tot and Tyke Itsy Bitsy Yoga classes at Yoga Studio Be in Kirkland and Orange Blossom Society in Redmond. Baby classes are for newborn to crawling and contain unique yoga postures designed to support baby’s development. Tot classes are for crawling to 24 months and offer tot-centric poses that encourage and support physical exploration. Tyke classes are for 2 to 4 and half and teach kids yoga through social interaction, repetition and play. Late Spring Session registration is underway. Yoga, Art and Movement Camp at Limber Yoga
